The Human Mammal (2020)

The following piece captures my foray into creative non fiction.

To draw on a cliché, last year was unprecedented in many ways. A student of history or science would probably say that it was time for the next plague. Nature always collects its dues. In Australia, nature decided to cash in some big checks with the megafires that killed 1 billion animals. I am endlessly fascinated by the way in which humans individually and collectively respond to crisis. What are we but big brained mammals with the capacity for tremendous cruelty or tremendous kindness?
